Asian Slaw and Smoked Salmon
Easy, and surprisingly filling.
As a slaw OR smoked salmon for a side dish, snack or lunch, and all together for a very filling dinner.
Red onions and carrots last a long time. Red and White cabbage heads last a long time in the fridge ( especially if you wrap them in tin foil and leave in the salad drawer). A packet of smoked salmon usually also has a good long sell by date on it.
We usually have all these in the kitchen. So it’s one of our favourite, go to, kinda healthy, fish and chips ( chips of veg ahaha ) replacement.
First… the short, to the point, recipe !
Does it bother you when you have to scroll for miles and miles down a page to get to the actual recipe. Well, not this time !
I wish I could remember where I originally found this recipe. When I do, I will certainly credit it, because it’s so yummy ! It’s a huge portion but it would serve 2 very greedy, or 4 ‘normal’ people. ( We’re greedy if this is the whole meal ).
Ingredients for the slaw:
- ½ head red cabbage, chopped
- 1 cup shredded green cabbage
- ½ cup shredded carrots
- ½ medium red onion, chopped
Ingredients for the sauce:
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons minced ginger
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
- 4 tablespoons (¼ cup) low sodium soy sauce
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- optional… a handful of sesame seeds
Instructions ( just 2 !)
- Add red cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, and onion to a large bowl.
- Pour olive oil, ginger, garlic, brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, and sesame seeds into a Bell jar, Mason jar, or even a well washed jam jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake until well combined. Pour ½ over vegetables and toss until well coated. Pour up to ½ onto the smoked salmon and marinade. Serve with leftover dressing on top, if needed.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on a good kitchen knife !
or research forever then be disappointed…
These are the knives we use. Paul discovered them first in the Raymond Blanc’s kitchens when he did some great cooking courses at Le Manoir aux Quatres. They’re real workhorses. We love them, and even took them with us in our new simple life.
We know so many people that have bought very costly, extra-special knives … only to be disappointed. So, I’m really glad to finally be able to share this one with you because I LOVE chopping. It’s so therapeutic… well, maybe chopping for up to 4 people is ! And, these ones won’t break the bank.
My favourites are the largest which I use most, and are best for chop chop chopping, or I use the heel of it to crush garlic I also love the small most flexible one to get round corners and inside skins.
You don’t need to spend a lot for a nice mason or ball jar too, you can even use a well cleaned jam jar for this recipe.
